MANILA, Philippines - A man sustained head injuries from shattered glass that reportedly fell over him after a suspected tornado ripped through Quezon City, while hail fell over parts of the city.

In a report from News 5's Ina Zara, an unidentified man was found bloodied inside a Jollibee fastfood branch in Frisco, QC. Witnesses claimed a powerful wind from a tornado hit the area, causing the glass window to fall. The man was rushed to the St. Agnes Hospital in San Antonio, QC.

Meanwhile, several children, who were at the fastfood's playground, also sustained injuries from the shattered glass. None of the children had grave injuries.

The Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) cannot verify the occurrence of the tornado. Samuel Duran, PAGASA forecaster, told InterAksyon that the state weather bureau cannot monitor localized wind occurrences like tornadoes.

PAGASA also did not verify reports that hail, as small as pebbles, fell from the sky during a sudden thunderstorm that affected parts of Metro Manila.

Amid the scorching heat this afternoon, several Quezon City residents were surprised when ice fell shortly after 4 pm. The hailstorm reportedly made driving along Commonwealth and Tomas Morato nearly impossible.

According to Gener Quitlong of PAGASA, hail usually precedes tornadoes. "It is common for hailstorms to occur when there are tornadoes," he told InterAksyon.

Quitlong said hail usually occurs when a low-lying thunderstorm cloud, usually 5-7 kilometers off the ground, appears. The height of the thunderstorm is not enough for the ice particles to melt into rain, and thus they fall as grains of ice that could be as small as pebbles and sometimes as big as basketballs.

Quitlong said Filipinos should expect more hail and tornadoes to occur as the country transitions into summer.
